A structured approach to organising chess tournaments
Each tournament consists of a set number of rounds, during which players are paired according to an official system. The pairing ensures that matches are balanced and consistent with the players’ level and results throughout the tournament.
The specific format (time control, number of games, Swiss system or other format) is specified for each event, so that every player can choose the tournament that best suits their goals and level.
Competitive prices to reward performance
Every chess tournament organised by Qb4 features an attractive prize structure. Players’ performance is rewarded through prizes specified in advance. Qb4 stands out for its competitive prize money, which is higher than that generally offered by a traditional club. The aim is threefold:
- Attracting ambitious players, both Belgian and international
- To enhance the professional image of chess tournaments in Belgium
- To enable players of all levels to compete for a prize
FAQ
Everything you need to know about the chess tournaments organised by Qb4
How do I enter a chess tournament?
Registration for a chess tournament is done directly via the tournament’s details page and dedicated page. Each page sets out the specific terms and conditions. Once registered, the player is entered into the pairing system for the various rounds of the tournament.
Who can take part in a chess tournament?
Our tournaments are open to all players, whether they are club members, registered players, experienced independent players or beginners. Depending on the format, some tournaments are organised as open events, in ELO-rated groups, or in youth and senior categories, féminines ou autres. Chaque joueur ou joueuse trouve une compétition tailored to their performance and ranking. Thanks to the match-pairing system, we ensure balanced matches between players and teams.
How does the ranking system work in a chess tournament?
The ranking is based on the number of points scored: a win is worth more than a draw. In the event of a tie, tiebreakers are applied to determine the top spot in each category. The results also influence players’ ELO ratings when the tournament is FIDE or FRBE-rated, for example.
What are the prizes and awards for the winners?
We are offering prizes and awards for the best performances. The winner of the leaderboard will receive the top prize. Other specific awards may also be presented. The total prize pool and the distribution of prizes are listed on each tournament page.
How many rounds are there in a tournament?
The number of rounds depends on the tournament format: open, blitz, championship or final. The pairing system ensures that each game is organised fairly throughout the competition. The exact format, time control and the way in which players are divided into groups are always specified in advance. Tournaments generally consist of between 9 and 11 rounds.
Are Qb4 tournaments reserved for professionals?
No. Qb4 tournaments are open to all players, regardless of their level (professional, experienced, beginner or learning to play). The aim is to promote chess in Belgium by offering professional organisation, high-quality venues, supportive coaching and an accessible competitive experience.
In some tournaments, depending on the ELO rating and the performance of the participants, players are grouped together to ensure greater fairness. The pairing system ensures balanced matches throughout the competition.
